Makalu Base Camp Trek.

Makalu-Barun National Park in eastern Nepal virgin territory that is almost uninhabited. This remote terrain is situated east of the Sagarmatha (Everest) National Park between the high and desolate Tibetan plateau and the deep gorge carved by the Arun River that lies in the subtropical belt. An outstanding trek, it can be done either from Tumlingtar or Hile. The itinerary that Cho-Oyu has chalked out starts and ends at Tumlingtar. The trek takes us up the Arun River to Num, Shadawa, Tashigaon, the last permanent settlement in the valley, among others, before emerging into the upper Barun Valley for spectacular close up views of the south face of Mt. Makalu (8,463 m), the fifth highest mountain in the world, as well as other Himalayan massifs, including Mt. Chamlang (7,319 m) and Mt. Baruntse (7,129 m). Peak 4, Peak 6, Peak 7 Everest and Lhotse complete the picture. These lofty peaks descend to the Arun River at a mere 670 m altitude within a distance of just 40 km. The Makalu-Barun Valley is one of stunning contrasts where high waterfalls cascade into deep gorges, craggy rocks rise from lush green forests and alpine meadows with colorful flowers in bloom in the lap of shining snow covered peaks. This unique landscape also shelters some of the last untouched mountain ecosystems. With an unparalled diversity of climates and habitats, the area shelters some of the rarest species of plants and animals undisturbed by mankind. Over 3,000 species of flowering plants, 440 species of birds, and 75 species of mammals, including the endangered clouded leopard, red panda and the musk deer, have been recorded in this part of the Himalaya. The remarkable biodiversity of the area is of considerable global significance, and provides a natural laboratory for international scientific research.
